Get more done, in less time: The Art of Time Blocking


I've been listening to Cal Newport's book Deep Work (which you can pick up here), and the main theme of the book is being able to get more focused work done, in less time.

One of the ways Cal talks about overcoming these significant challenges in his book, is through time-blocking. He suggests in the video below that people that time block get, on average, 2X more done in their day compared with those who don't.


And yes, whilst he's selling his Time-Block Planner in it, in my opinion, you can just as easily create it through a page a day diary, or digitally using Outlook or Gmail Calendar. 

 

One thing I really like about his daily planner though is the checkbox to 'shutdown' for the day, because we ALL need a fixed end to the working day, especially if you're a business owner!


So regardless of how you time-block, make sure there is a cathartic ‘clocking off’ point so you can mentally close the door on your work for the day.

Every week I'll be sharing a thought with you that I'm pondering, in the hope that you can reflect on it over the weekend ready for the new week ahead.


This week is from one of my daily ‘go-to’ books, The Daily Stoic, by Ryan Holiday. I'm not religious, but I love the Stoic philosophy for helping me work through the challenges in my life. I've learned so much from this book and it will likely be a frequent contributor to the #TFTW section


We are constantly reminded every time we open Instagram, or head into town (remember doing that?!?), of all the things we don't have.


But if we can focus our attention regularly (preferably daily) on all we have to be grateful for, we can hold those wants lighter in the knowledge that our life is already filled with fantastic things.


We only need to switch on the news to see how fortunate the vast majority of people in the UK are compared to others around the World.

By all means want more, but don't let it consume you or distract you from appreciating all the things you have, and all the things you've already achieved in life.
